Abstract

Impaired visual acuity (VA) can contribute to development problems in perception, cognition, motor control and communication in children with visual impairment. Some sensory training can improve motor function as the elastic bandage, which has been used in some neurological diseases to provide body scheme due to the input sensory information. The objective was to evaluate how the elastic bandage can improve motor function in a child with visual disability. Type of study: clinical case. Method: a 2-year-od child, female sex, spastic hemiparetic to the left, presenting defficient AV due to cranioencephalic traumatism, attended in Physiotherapy Clinic Unimetrocamp/Wyden. The initial evaluation showed delayed motor development in the standing position and gait, hemi-neglect to the left. The treatment focused on the patient/environment and patient/therapist interactions and motor acquisiton stimuli. Elastic bandage was applied in association using the Therapy Taping Method through the technique in sleeve, on the left hand. After 12 sessions of physiotherapy, the patient began to accept therapeutic touch; improved his interaction with the therapist and the environment; he started playing with both hands and explore his hands. Attitudes of motor acquisition in orthostatic position and gait were more tolerated and she was able to start position on foot alone and march with support. The use of neuromotor stimulation combined with the Therapy Taping Method seemed  to be an effective treatment option to be used in children with visual impairment.
